Second Hatch? what on earth

Printer-friendly versionPDF version

So last nights hatch I suppose was a fluke as I had a second run tonight!  or was tonights a fluke???  In any case, this throws my timing of the hatches off for sure!  Apparently only a small amount of the clown eggs hatched last night which of course attributed to my poor capture rate.  Tonight however I captured a ton both with snagger and manual methods.  All the fry are now safely in their little tank to do their little thing.  I'm leaving the light on a bit this time to allow them to feed after capture.  Hopefully this works... I attribute my failures in previous runs to the following:

Poor Salinity Control

Siphoning Tank Dry

Larval snagger runs poor due to wrong spectrum of light (Red, Blue seem to not work... white seems preferred)

Possibly due to 2* temp difference in larval tank (78* ) and broodstock tank (80*)

The good news is that I've removed a few other problems such as:

High turbulence at snagger intake due to air tube being too close to opening

High loss rate when removing snagger due to poor design

High loss prior to morph due to some idiot not decapsulating his brine eggs

so there we have it, but bear in mind the larval snagger is the key here, my goal is not to breed clowns but to improve methodology for larviculture and aquaculture in general.  This second run gave me the chance to test a number of theories I came up with last night... sure enough the snagger worked much better... now to work on the attractant light!!
